Surprisingly, there are a few things you never want to throw in moving boxes because you’ll need them the first night (maybe even the first week) that you’re in your new house. After all, no one wants to spend their first night at home without any toothpaste.
What to Include in an Overnight Moving Bag
If you thought packing took a while, just wait until it’s time to unpack. With it taking the average person nearly two months to completely settle into their new home, below are some things to pack in an “overnight bag.”
1. Toiletries
Toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, hair brushes, soap, and towels are just a few things you’re going to need the moment you step into your house — you don’t want them sitting in a box in the back of your moving truck.
2. Bedding
The first night in your new home should be one you never forget — but not because you had to sleep on a mattress without sheets or pillows. On your first night, make sure you have sheets, blankets, and pillows nearby, even if they’re just a spare set you don’t plan on using forever.
3. Pajamas
Speaking of your first night at home, make sure you have pajamas handy so that you can change out of your moving clothes and into something clean and comfortable.
4. Spare Outfits
If you’re like most people, you packed your clothes together — sweaters with sweaters, jeans with jeans, and t-shirts with t-shirts. This can make it pretty hard to put together a full outfit in the morning once it’s time to get back to unpacking or to work. In your overnight bag, be sure to include a handful of complete outfits you can throw on until your closet is full.
5. Trash Bags
Trash bags will never not come in handy. Even if you don’t think you’ll need them, you likely will!
