For families relocating to Connecticut, school quality is rarely an afterthought. In Fairfield, it tends to be the deciding factor.
The town runs one of the stronger public school systems in the state. Private school enrollment runs nearly double the Connecticut average. And two universities call Fairfield home, shaping both its academic culture and its economic life.
For households in the middle of a relocation decision, here is what the education landscape actually looks like.
Fairfield’s public school district serves students across 16 schools, spanning one preschool, eleven elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools.
Total enrollment sits at approximately 9,355 students, with a minority enrollment of 30 percent and 10.4 percent of students qualifying for the federal free and reduced price meal program.
Elementary proficiency rates in the district are well above state benchmarks. Seventy-seven percent of elementary students test at or above proficient in reading, and 74 percent reach that mark in math. At the middle school level, 69 percent test proficiently in reading and 60 percent in math.
At the elementary level, Dwight Elementary School and Sherman School are top performers with strong test scores and consistent high ratings. The district as a whole outperforms state averages across most key metrics.
Fairfield runs two public high schools, and both rank consistently among the best in Connecticut.
Warde sits at 755 Melville Avenue and ranks 28th among public high schools in Connecticut. More than half the student body, 54 percent, participates in Advanced Placement coursework, and the school carries a 35 percent minority enrollment. It is the kind of place where academic programming runs deep without feeling like a pressure cooker.
Ludlowe, on Unquowa Road, ranks 19th in Connecticut and edges Warde slightly on both state ranking and AP participation, with 56 percent of students enrolled in AP courses. Minority enrollment sits at 23 percent, with 13 percent of students considered economically disadvantaged.
Both schools maintain graduation rates above the state average, and the rivalry between them is one of those details longtime Fairfield residents tend to mention early.

Families looking beyond the public district have a real range of options in Fairfield. The town supports several independent and parochial schools serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade, most commonly Catholic in affiliation. Prospective families should contact individual schools directly for current enrollment, tuition, and admissions information.
Few towns Fairfield’s size can point to two universities operating within their own limits. Both institutions shape the town’s intellectual character and contribute meaningfully to local employment and community programming.
Located on North Benson Road, Fairfield University is a Jesuit institution serving around 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students across six schools, including Arts and Sciences, the Charles F. Dolan School of Business, Engineering, Nursing, Education, and University College. Students come from more than 35 states and 46 countries, and the university functions as both an academic institution and a cultural anchor for the wider Fairfield community.
Sacred Heart University on Park Avenue is the second-largest Catholic university in New England, with approximately 6,000 students enrolled across four colleges: Arts and Sciences, Education and Health Professions, University College, and the AACSB-accredited John F. Welch College of Business. The university offers more than 40 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs, operates satellite locations internationally, and fields 31 Division I athletic teams. Its community service programming is one of the more active in the region.
Both universities open cultural programming, performances, and public lectures to the broader Fairfield community throughout the academic year.

We are so grateful to Murphy Moving for a flawless move. We have used Murphy three other times, and we will happily use them again for any future moves. Len and Lisa were super helpful on the front end in providing a quote, scheduling the move, giving us suggestions, and answering all of our questions. They checked in throughout the process to make sure all was going well. Our movers, Marcelo and Fillipe, were amazing. They encountered more than a few challenges with multiple stairs, and lots of tight turns in narrow hallways. Their attitudes were very pleasant throughout and all of our belongings were handled with much care. They did a great job!

We were very fortunate to find Murphy Moving and Storage for our complicated relocation that also required storage. Geraldine, Kyla and Beto and his team of movers were all very personable and professional. They maintained excellent communication with us throughout our moving process. They made a very stressful situation pleasant and enjoyable. We felt so comfortable with Geraldine when she visited our home for the inventory and offered suggestions and encouragement for preparing to move. Kyla was in frequent communication and so patient with editing my changing inventory and arranging a schedule for pick up. Beto and his team of movers were friendly while remaining focused on their individual tasks and their teamwork was remarkable. They wrapped each piece of furniture so well and treated each piece of furniture and every carton as if it were a precious jewel, not to mention how well they arranged the pieces for safe transportation in the moving van. We feel Murphy Moving and Storage is a trustworthy company. We felt and continue to feel confident in their care of us and our 39 years of accumulated and valued possessions. We highly recommend Murphy Moving and Storage and we thank you for your service.
