Exploring Fairfield’s Parks, Beaches, and Outdoor Spaces

Not every town can claim five miles of coastline, a working downtown, three historic districts, two university arts programs, and a farmers market on the green, all within the same town limits.

Fairfield, CT is one of the few that actually delivers on that combination. For families, professionals, and retirees considering a move here, the lifestyle infrastructure is as much a draw as the commute or the school ratings.

Five Beaches, One Town

Fairfield has five beaches along five miles of Long Island Sound shoreline: Penfield Beach, Jennings Beach, Sasco Beach, Southport Beach, and South Pine Creek Beach. That is not a statistic most Connecticut towns can match.

Jennings Beach

The largest of the five at 27 acres, Jennings is where most of Fairfield’s waterfront community life plays out, with summer movie nights, Sand Jam events, Fourth of July fireworks, and bonfire permits that book out fast. From October through March, dogs and horses are welcome on the sand.

Penfield Beach

A 3.5-acre beach with sailboat racks, seasonal lockers, a covered deck, and charcoal grills, Penfield also hosts two waterfront banquet facilities and the Sandy Ground playground, built in memory of Sandy Hook victim Jessica Rekos. One of the more versatile spots on Fairfield’s shoreline.

Sasco Beach

Nearly 10 acres tucked south of Southport Harbor, Sasco is the most secluded of the five and stays that way by design: summer parking is restricted to residents with beach stickers, and no daily fee option exists.

South Pine Creek Beach

The smallest beach in town, with basic bathroom facilities and a compact lot. Summer parking is resident-sticker only with no daily alternative, making it a neighborhood access point rather than a destination beach.

Southport Beach

A quiet 2.5-acre property on Pequot Avenue in historic Southport village, with lifeguards on duty in summer and parking restricted to resident sticker holders through the season.

Parks and Open Space

170 acres of parkland to work with, Fairfield Parks and Recreation has built out something most towns this size cannot offer: real outdoor variety. Hiking, horseback riding, dog walking, and fishing are all part of the everyday picture.

The Connecticut Audubon Society Center adds another layer, with nature trails, year-round programming, and summer camps that local families tend to book early. The Birdcraft Museum, tucked separately from the main center, is smaller and quieter but worth knowing about, with a pond trail and natural history programming that surprises first-time visitors.

Boating

Fairfield takes its boating seriously. South Benson Marina handles up to 630 boats across a wide range of sizes, while the historic Ye Yacht Yard at Southport Harbor is the spot for smaller vessels, kayak storage, and access to moorings in the harbor. Boat rack rentals are also available at Jennings and Penfield Beach, and Jennings has a fishing pier with a bait shack right on site for anyone who prefers to keep things simple.

Bicycling

The town has been quietly expanding its bicycle path network, with routes designed for both recreational riders and people who would rather not drive to the train station. The first completed stretch runs along Mill Plain Road and Unquowa Road from Brookside Road down to Post Road, with dedicated bike parking going in at the train station and other key spots around town.

Fishing, Shellfishing, and Hunting

Fairfield’s shellfishing program is more serious than most people realize. Over 1,000 acres of municipal shellfish beds stretch from Ash Creek to Sasco Creek along the Sound, with recreational clamming centered around Sasco Hill and Southport beaches and commercial access across all coastal waters. The Shellfish Commission keeps close tabs on water quality and resource management, which is part of why the program has held up as well as it has over the years.

Golf and Tennis

For golfers, the town runs a public 18-hole course, a par-three option, and a driving range, so there is something available regardless of how seriously you play. Tennis is covered through Fairfield Indoor Tennis Club for year-round programming, and both sports are also available at Brooklawn Country Club, The Country Club of Fairfield, and The Patterson Club for those who prefer the private club setting.

Getting Ready for a Move in Fairfield, CT?

The beaches, the downtown energy, the arts calendar, the trail system: these are the reasons people choose Fairfield over other towns with similar commute times and school ratings. Once the decision is made, the move itself needs to go smoothly so you can actually start enjoying it.

Murphy Moving & Storage has spent more than a century helping Connecticut families get settled, handling the logistics carefully enough that nothing gets in the way of a good start in a new neighborhood.

Outstanding service from start to finish!

We are so grateful to Murphy Moving for a flawless move. We have used Murphy three other times, and we will happily use them again for any future moves. Len and Lisa were super helpful on the front end in providing a quote, scheduling the move, giving us suggestions, and answering all of our questions. They checked in throughout the process to make sure all was going well. Our movers, Marcelo and Fillipe, were amazing. They encountered more than a few challenges with multiple stairs, and lots of tight turns in narrow hallways. Their attitudes were very pleasant throughout and all of our belongings were handled with much care. They did a great job!

Exceptional Care and Service from Start to Finish

We were very fortunate to find Murphy Moving and Storage for our complicated relocation that also required storage. Geraldine, Kyla and Beto and his team of movers were all very personable and professional. They maintained excellent communication with us throughout our moving process. They made a very stressful situation pleasant and enjoyable. We felt so comfortable with Geraldine when she visited our home for the inventory and offered suggestions and encouragement for preparing to move. Kyla was in frequent communication and so patient with editing my changing inventory and arranging a schedule for pick up. Beto and his team of movers were friendly while remaining focused on their individual tasks and their teamwork was remarkable. They wrapped each piece of furniture so well and treated each piece of furniture and every carton as if it were a precious jewel, not to mention how well they arranged the pieces for safe transportation in the moving van. We feel Murphy Moving and Storage is a trustworthy company. We felt and continue to feel confident in their care of us and our 39 years of accumulated and valued possessions. We highly recommend Murphy Moving and Storage and we thank you for your service.
