Living in Fairfield, CT: Community, Lifestyle, and Local Amenities

Most people discover Fairfield through the commute math, then stay because of everything else. The town sits on five miles of Long Island Sound coastline with a working downtown, a live music scene that draws fans from across the region, and enough parks and open space to give the whole place room to breathe.

It has more than 61,000 residents and still runs like a town where people actually know their neighbors. That combination is harder to find than it sounds.

Life on the Water

Fairfield’s relationship with the Sound shapes the town’s identity in ways that go beyond summer weekends. The town maintains five public beaches, each with its own feel and access rules.

Jennings is the social center of the waterfront, with summer movie nights, Sand Jam events, and the Fourth of July fireworks drawing crowds from across town.

Penfield carries a more classic beach-day character, with a pavilion, a grilling area, and sailboat racks.

Sasco, South Pine Creek, and Southport Beach are quieter, resident-focused spots that stay uncrowded precisely because not everyone knows about them.

Away from the Sound, Lake Mohegan gives the town a freshwater option: 170 acres of trails, a swimming area, and a sprinkler park that local families with younger children tend to know well.

Two town marinas round out the waterfront picture. South Benson Marina handles up to approximately 600 boats, while Ye Yacht Yard at Southport Harbor offers moorings, launch services, and kayak racks.

Where People Gather

Sherman Green and the Post Road corridor are the gravitational center of Fairfield’s social life. The dining scene here has expanded steadily and now covers everything from quick weekday lunches to proper dinner spots, with a popular Restaurant Week each year that draws residents out to try places they have been meaning to visit.

The Fairfield Farmers Market sets up on Sherman Green every Sunday through the market season, rain or shine, with local farms, specialty food vendors, and small-batch producers. It is one of those weekly rituals that long-time residents build their Sunday mornings around.

The town calendar adds to it with the annual Sidewalk Sale and Street Fair in summer, Fairfield Oktoberfest in the fall, and the Holiday Shop and Stroll in December, now in its 13th year.

A Town That Takes the Arts Seriously

Fairfield has more residents working in arts, design, and media than 90 percent of communities across the country, and the cultural infrastructure reflects it.

Live Music

The Fairfield Theatre Company runs two venues from its Sanford Street location. StageOne is a 225-seat room consistently rated the best place to hear live music in the region. The Warehouse next door seats 640 and hosts over 250 concerts, film screenings, and community events each year, drawing more than 70,000 patrons annually.

Performing Arts

The Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University covers classical music, dance, and public lecture series on North Benson Road. The Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts at Sacred Heart University adds programming on Park Avenue. For larger touring acts, the Klein Auditorium and the arena in neighboring Bridgeport are both within a short drive.

Museums

The Fairfield Museum and History Center sits on the Historic Town Green with exhibit galleries and a research library. The Fairfield University Art Museum offers free admission year-round and presents four to six special exhibitions annually alongside its permanent collection.

Green Space and Active Living

Fairfield Parks and Recreation manages 170 acres of parkland across the town, with a recreational infrastructure that goes well beyond the beaches. A public 18-hole golf course, a par-three course, and a driving range serve golfers of every level.

Tennis runs through Fairfield Indoor Tennis Club as well as three private country clubs. The town’s bicycle path network is still expanding, with completed routes along Mill Plain Road and Unquowa Road and bike parking going in at the train station and key downtown destinations.

The Connecticut Audubon Society Center offers hiking trails and year-round nature programming, while the Birdcraft Museum provides a quieter pond-trail experience with natural history exhibits.

Game Nights and Campus Energy

Both Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University compete at the Division I level, and the campus sports culture spills into the wider community.

Men’s and women’s basketball at Fairfield University and hockey at Sacred Heart draw consistent local followings, with several home games hosted at the arena in Bridgeport. For professional hockey, the Bridgeport Islanders of the American Hockey League play out of the same venue.

Outstanding service from start to finish!

We are so grateful to Murphy Moving for a flawless move. We have used Murphy three other times, and we will happily use them again for any future moves. Len and Lisa were super helpful on the front end in providing a quote, scheduling the move, giving us suggestions, and answering all of our questions. They checked in throughout the process to make sure all was going well. Our movers, Marcelo and Fillipe, were amazing. They encountered more than a few challenges with multiple stairs, and lots of tight turns in narrow hallways. Their attitudes were very pleasant throughout and all of our belongings were handled with much care. They did a great job!

Exceptional Care and Service from Start to Finish

We were very fortunate to find Murphy Moving and Storage for our complicated relocation that also required storage. Geraldine, Kyla and Beto and his team of movers were all very personable and professional. They maintained excellent communication with us throughout our moving process. They made a very stressful situation pleasant and enjoyable. We felt so comfortable with Geraldine when she visited our home for the inventory and offered suggestions and encouragement for preparing to move. Kyla was in frequent communication and so patient with editing my changing inventory and arranging a schedule for pick up. Beto and his team of movers were friendly while remaining focused on their individual tasks and their teamwork was remarkable. They wrapped each piece of furniture so well and treated each piece of furniture and every carton as if it were a precious jewel, not to mention how well they arranged the pieces for safe transportation in the moving van. We feel Murphy Moving and Storage is a trustworthy company. We felt and continue to feel confident in their care of us and our 39 years of accumulated and valued possessions. We highly recommend Murphy Moving and Storage and we thank you for your service.
