Quality Moving & Storage Services. Professional Movers Serving New York & Connecticut
If you’ve been researching where to move in Fairfield County, you’ve probably already seen the headlines. Greenwich consistently ranks as the #1 best place to raise a family in Connecticut.
And that’s not a marketing line. It’s backed up by low crime rates, a public school system that feeds into one of the state’s most decorated high schools, and a town that genuinely invests in its green spaces and community life.
But here’s the thing most of those rankings won’t tell you: Greenwich isn’t one neighborhood.
It’s nine distinct communities, each with its own personality, price range, and practical trade-offs for families. Moving to “Greenwich” without knowing the difference between Riverside and Byram is like picking a school without visiting the campus.
At Murphy Moving & Storage, we’ve spent over 100 years helping families relocate to and within Greenwich. We’ve moved boxes down Sound Beach Avenue, navigated narrow driveways in Back Country, and handled more than a few piano moves along the tree-lined streets of Mid-Country.
Here’s what we’ve learned about where families like yours tend to thrive.
Riverside is where families land when schools are the top priority. Riverside School (K-5) holds National Blue Ribbon status, which is a federal distinction given to only a handful of schools in the country. The neighborhood itself is walkable, community-oriented, and sits close to both I-95 and the Riverside Metro-North station, making it a favorite for commuting parents.
The Riverside Association hosts year-round events that bring neighbors together, and the neighborhood’s proximity to Binney Park gives kids a great outdoor outlet year-round. Value-wise, Riverside typically comes in a bit below Old Greenwich prices, which makes it the sweet spot many families are hunting for on the Gold Coast.
If your family wants to walk to a coffee shop, bike to the beach, and still have one of the best school districts in the state, Old Greenwich deserves serious consideration. The village center on Sound Beach Avenue has genuine small-town character, with local shops, restaurants, and the beloved Perrot Memorial Library, where summer reading programs fill up fast.
Tod’s Point (Greenwich Point Park) is just minutes away, giving families a real beach with trails, picnic areas, and water access. Old Greenwich commands a premium price, but many families find the lifestyle trade-off worth it, especially if the commute to Manhattan is a regular part of life.
For families relocating from New York City who are not ready to spend more than $2 million on their first home, Cos Cob is often where the conversation starts. It offers one of the most affordable entry points into Greenwich while maintaining a genuine community character rooted in its arts colony heritage. The Greenwich Art Society proudly calls this neighborhood home.
The compact village along East Putnam Avenue has everything a family needs within reach, and the Mianus River Gorge offers some of the best hiking in Fairfield County. Cos Cob School (K-5) has a strong reputation, and younger families are moving in at a steady pace. If you want a Greenwich address with room to grow, this is your neighborhood.
Mid-Country appeals to buyers looking for privacy, larger estates, and a quieter pace of life without leaving Greenwich behind. Homes sit on spacious properties surrounded by wooded roads and manicured landscapes, creating a more secluded residential feel. The area continues to attract families who want newer custom homes, expanded outdoor living space, and access to highly regarded schools like North Mianus School.
The one honest trade-off? You’ll need a car for most errands, and the train is a short drive rather than a walk. For families where one parent works from home, that usually isn’t a deal-breaker.
Glenville doesn’t make as many headlines as Riverside or Old Greenwich, but it earns consistent loyalty from families who move there. Prices are genuinely more accessible, the community has real character left over from its days as a mill village along the Byram River, and outdoor enthusiasts will love the Edward Schongalla Nature Preserve and Laddin’s Rock Sanctuary nearby.
Greenwich doesn’t have a single “family neighborhood.” The entire town is oriented around families. Over 29% of households here have children, and every community within town limits feeds into Greenwich Public Schools.
What Greenwich does have is real variety.
A family that wants a walkable village with beach access will be miserable on a five-acre Back Country estate, and vice versa. The biggest mistake we see families make when moving to Greenwich is choosing a neighborhood based on price alone without thinking through the daily routine.
Murphy Moving & Storage serves all nine Greenwich neighborhoods. Whether you’re coming from New York City, Westchester, or relocating within town, we handle full-service residential moves including packing, unpacking, secure storage, and specialty item transport. We’re licensed, insured, and have been part of the Fairfield County community for over a century.

Riverside and Old Greenwich are the most popular choices for families with young children, thanks to top-rated elementary schools and walkable, community-centered neighborhoods. Cos Cob is a strong alternative for families looking for more affordable options without leaving Greenwich.
Yes. Greenwich Public Schools consistently rank among the top systems in Connecticut. Greenwich High School offers both AP and IB programs and serves over 2,700 students. Every neighborhood in Greenwich feeds into the same high school.
It depends heavily on the neighborhood. Entry prices in Byram start around $400K, while Old Greenwich and Riverside typically run from $1.5 million and up. Mid-Country and Back Country are estate territory. Cos Cob sits in the middle, making it one of the more accessible options for families new to the area.
Greenwich consistently scores high for safety in state and national rankings. It’s one of the primary reasons families relocate here from New York City.
The Metro-North New Haven Line connects Greenwich directly to Grand Central Terminal, with stops in Cos Cob, Riverside, and Old Greenwich. Drive times to Midtown Manhattan typically run 45 to 60 minutes via I-95. Most families find the commute manageable, especially from Riverside and Old Greenwich which have the most convenient train access.
Murphy Moving & Storage has been helping families relocate throughout Greenwich, CT and the surrounding Gold Coast for over 100 years.
We know these neighborhoods inside and out, from narrow driveways and winding residential roads to the seasonal timing and planning that help a Greenwich move stay efficient and stress-free.

We are so grateful to Murphy Moving for a flawless move. We have used Murphy three other times, and we will happily use them again for any future moves. Len and Lisa were super helpful on the front end in providing a quote, scheduling the move, giving us suggestions, and answering all of our questions. They checked in throughout the process to make sure all was going well. Our movers, Marcelo and Fillipe, were amazing. They encountered more than a few challenges with multiple stairs, and lots of tight turns in narrow hallways. Their attitudes were very pleasant throughout and all of our belongings were handled with much care. They did a great job!

In summary, the patient and caring guidance from Geraldine, the continual communication and support from Kyla , the safe long term storage, and the very remarkable moving skills and talent by Beto and his team made our (four month) moving experience an absolute pleasure. We valued our trusting relationship and are happy for future families who will be in their very personal and highly professional care. Thank you over and again Murphy Moving and Storage. We wouldn't be where we are without you!

We were very fortunate to find Murphy Moving and Storage for our complicated relocation that also required storage. Geraldine, Kyla and Beto and his team of movers were all very personable and professional. They maintained excellent communication with us throughout our moving process. They made a very stressful situation pleasant and enjoyable. We felt so comfortable with Geraldine when she visited our home for the inventory and offered suggestions and encouragement for preparing to move. Kyla was in frequent communication and so patient with editing my changing inventory and arranging a schedule for pick up. Beto and his team of movers were friendly while remaining focused on their individual tasks and their teamwork was remarkable. They wrapped each piece of furniture so well and treated each piece of furniture and every carton as if it were a precious jewel, not to mention how well they arranged the pieces for safe transportation in the moving van. We feel Murphy Moving and Storage is a trustworthy company. We felt and continue to feel confident in their care of us and our 39 years of accumulated and valued possessions. We highly recommend Murphy Moving and Storage and we thank you for your service.
